- Nearly 1.7 million people are currently food insecure in Uganda. This includes approximately 1.2 million people suffering the effects of prolonged civil insecurity in the north, about 275,000 in the northeast (Karamoja), where multiple hazards resulted in lower than normal crop harvests in both 2006 and 2007, and about 200,000 flood–affected individuals in eastern Uganda.

- With no carryover food stocks following poor 2007 harvests, the hunger season started two months early in Karamoja, northeastern Uganda, in February 2008. The hunger season, lasting through June, is expected to be particularly severe, with increasing numbers of households becoming moderately food insecure. Approximately 275,000 people need and have received food assistance as of April 2008, but the number is increasing daily.

- An estimated 200,000 people affected by floods in the second half of 2007 in the country's eastern Amuria, Katakwi, and northern Lira districts also have no food stocks and are in need of external food assistance, currently unavailable due to resource shortages.

- While the 2007 sorghum crop supports food security in northern Uganda for households that were able to cultivate, high food insecurity remains. The bulk of many households' food comes from the World Food Programme (WFP)'s food assistance program.

- Staple crop supplies remain normal but are gradually diminishing following seasonal trends. As supplies deplete further, and with commodity prices higher than normal and rising still, purchasing power is decreasing, limiting market access and threatening food security, particularly for urban households dependent on the market for their food supplies. Seasonal trends, increased regional trade, high transportation costs and inflation are all factors behind these increases.
